The word “doula” comes from an ancient Greek word meaning “woman’s servant.” Throughout history women with experience in successful childbirth and nursing have helped other women to birth and care for their newborns. We are proud to continue the tradition of women helping other women through some of the most profound moments of their and their families’ lives. Of course, birthing methods have changed since ancient times, and while modern doulas respect the traditional ways of birthing, they also embrace evidence-based methods, medicine, and the inclusion of partners and families in the birthing process. Having an experienced doula to serve you during your antepartum, birth, and postpartum can reduce stress and increase positive outcomes.
“The continuous presence of a doula during labor and delivery reduced the use of analgesics, forceps delivery, cesarean delivery, and duration of labor time.” – Scott, K., Berkowitz, G., Klaus M. A comparison of intermittent and continuous support during labor: a meta-analysis. Am J Obstet Gynecol. 1999;180:1054–1059.
